Buserelin (Suprefact) and leuprolide (Lupron) are peptide analogues of the hypothalamic hormone LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone). Chronic exposure of the pituitary to these agents abolishes gonadotropin release and results in markedly decreased estrogen and testosterone production by the gonads. Their major clinical use is in the palliative hormonal therapy of cancer of the prostate. [Pg.650]

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone is secreted by neurons in the hypothalamus. It travels through the hypothalamic-pituitary venous portal plexus to the anterior pituitary, where it binds to G protein-coupled receptors on the plasma membranes of gonadotroph cells. Pulsatile GnRH secretion is required to stimulate the gonadotroph cell to produce and release LH and FSH. [Pg.837]

The testes and ovaries synthesize hormones necessary for physical development and reproduction. A single hypothalamic-releasing factor, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, stimulates the anterior pituitary to release the glycoproteins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and... [Pg.237]
