Photoluminescence techniques will be applied to a broader range of systems, particularly oxide-supported sulfides (because of their important role in hydrotreating catalysis) as well as unsupported or oxide-supported (oxi)carbides or (oxi)nitrides (because of their growing importance as substitutes for noble metals and because they have metallic and acidic functions). Moreover, improved procedures for preparing catalytic materials will enable the design of tailored oxides with better defined characteristics, such as size, composition, and structure. The accumulation of data concerning the behavior of surface anions will also lead to a more refined view of the coordination chemistry of anions of nontransition elements.

The Transition Metal Sulfides are a group of solids which form the basis for an extremely useful class of industrial hydrotreating and hydroprocessing catalysts. Solid state chemistry plays an important role in understanding and controlling the catalytic properties of these sulfide catalysts. This report discusses the preparation of sulfide catalysts, the role of disorder and anisotropy in governing catalytic properties, and the role of structure in the promotion of molybdenum disulfide by cobalt. 

The characteristics of dehydrogenation coking vary with the chemistry of the catalytic process. Important features are best considered with three important examples (1) catalytic reforming, (2) hydrotreating, and (3)... 

Items which have never been included in a kinetic analysis of the HDN network of quinoline are the formation and disappearance rates of PCHA, a key C-N bond cleavage intermediate, and the inhibition effect on the conversion of OPA, another important HDN intermediate. Furthermore, the absolute adsorption constants of these nitrogen-containing compounds on the catalytic sites for the different reaction steps, which are very important for the understanding of the chemistry of HDN and for extrapolating the laboratory data to the practical hydrotreating process, are not available.
