There are numerous cases, where identical bases, mismatched bases, and even complementary bases in protonated states are involved in hydrogen bonding. Examples are as follows Protonated adenine (HA+) has been observed in DNA mismatches as well as in RNA in pairs such as HA 1 (antl) G(syn) and HA+(anti) C(anti) (70). A further hydrogen-bonding example which has also been demonstrated with pyridine derivatives is the aromatic C-H- -N interaction <2001T5791, 2002AXCo697>. These interactions are exemplified by the solid state of pyridine dicarboxylate esters, with the interactions supplemented by C-H- -0=C contacts <2001CE0170>, and pyridiny-lisoxazoles <2000TL5827>. 

Polar aprotic solvents also exhibit dipole-dipole interactions, but they have no O-H or N-H bond so they are incapable of hydrogen bonding. Examples of polar aprotic solvents are shown in Figure 7.7. Polar aprotic solvents solvate only cations well. 

For most carbonyl compounds, the keto structure is greatly preferred, mainly due to the extra strength of the C = 0 bond. However, the enol form is stabilised if the C=C bond is conjugated with a second Jl-system or if the OH group is involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Example... 

Solvents can be differentiated according to the availability of dissociable hydrogen atoms attached to a more electronegative atom. Protic solvents readily form hydrogen bonds and can stabilize cations by electron pair donation and anions via hydrogen bonding.
