Hydrocolonic sonography

In the late 1980s, hydrocolonic sonography has been proposed as a sensitive and less invasive method to image the colon and colonic walls, to be used as an alternative to barium enema and colonoscopy. 

The accuracy of hydrocolonic sonography appears to depend on the indication and, therefore, on the study population. 

For these and other reasons (i.e., obviously hydrocolonic sonography does not offer the possibility/ opportunity to collect biopsies or remove polyps), although less invasive and expensive than colonoscopy, the use of hydrocolonic sonography, as a screening tool for colorectal cancer, should be evaluated with due care.
