Hydraulic applications

Most pumps that are used in hydraulic applications have a fixed displacement which cannot be changed except by replacing certain components. However, in some, it is possible to vary the size of the pumping chamber and thereby the displacement by means of external controls. Some unbalanced vane pumps and many piston units can be varied from maximum to zero delivery or even to reverse flow without modification to the pump s internal configuration. 

Tables 40.5 and 40.6 provide the mechanical forces, both extension and retraction, that can be generated by hydraulic cylinders. The tables are divided into the two principal operating pressure ranges associated with hydraulic applications.

Super tractor universal oils (STUOs), widely used in Europe and some other areas, are the extreme of multi-purpose lubricants. They arise from tractor hydraulic oils used for various hydraulic applications of agricultural machinery with added lubricant properties. STUOs have considerable advantages in reducing the number of oils required on a farm and reduce the possibility of wrong fluids in wrong reservoirs or machinery. Bulk purchases of one oil reduce unit costs against the costs of purchasing multiple hydraulic oils and lubricants. 

Many of the servo-assisted electro-hydraulic applications operate in two pressure ranges a low range, where high precision is needed, and a high pressure one, where stability is a primary requirement. 

Hydraulic Applications. Since sand-asphalt-sulfur mix formulations can be highly impervious, they may be used in hydraulic applications. Because the material can be cast in place without compaction, it is ideally suited for placement on slopes where conventional materials are difficult to compact such as for lining storage reservoirs, sewage lagoons, and ditches which are susceptibel to erosion. 

Reinforced PTFE applications include bushings and seals in compressor hydraulic applications, automotive applications, and pipe liners. A variety of moldings are used in aircraft and missiles and also in other applications where use at elevated temperatures is required.
