Human milk has multiple components that likely mediate this anti-infectious, immuno-logically enhancing effect. These include secretory immunoglobulin A, lactoferrin, lysozymes, intact cellular components, and oligosaccharides. A comprehensive list of compounds found in human milk by class of ingredient is shown in Table 3-2. 

Immunological cross-reactivity with human IgA was demonstrated initially for the serum and secretory immunoglobulins of the dog, cat, horse, cow, sheep, pig, goat, hedgehog, rabbit, and mouse, as well as of primates. We have discussed evidence for the presence of an IgA-like molecule in chickens. In brief, the chicken protein has antigenic determinants not shared by IgG or IgM, is found in relatively high concentration in secretory fiuids, and is selectively synthesized by plasma cells in the lamina propria of the gut. In addition, this protein, alone among chicken immunoglobulins, is capable of binding human secretory piece (97).
