Human race future

In terms of time, for high temperature steels it is conventional to restrict extrapolation to a time factor of 3, although years of practical experience are allowing this to be extended as far as 10. ISO 2578 [4] recommends no more than a factor of 4, from 5,000 to 20,000 h. A maximum value of 100 (two orders of magnitude) is permitted for pipes with the restriction that the temperature difference is limited to 60 °C for polyolefins and to 25 °C for PVC. General advice is no more than a factor of 10. Figures 9.1 and 9.2 show instances of somewhat extreme prediction far into the future of the human race. [Pg.137]

I ve been interviewed countless times, but my favorite interviewer is David Jay Brown, who asked me questions for his book Conversations on the Edge of the Apocalypse The book includes some of the coolest thinkers of our time as they consider the future of the human race and the mystery of consciousness. David s interviewees included such luminaries as Noam Chomsky, Kary Mullis, Candace Pert, Robert Anton Wilson, Douglas Rushkofif, Paul Krassner, Bruce Sterling, Ray Kurzweil, Hans Moravec, John Mack, and Alex Grey. [Pg.228]

It was Razum s way of telling them all the certainties he had foreseen, the futures he could never relate in words that if the plan failed, then Mogushestvo would raze Sverdlovsk and plough their corpses into the frozen soil, with sufficient armour left in Omsk to grind Wargaard s proud divisions to a fine powder that if the Doctor failed, then Razum would allow that to happen and take command of the Alliance, division by division, to claim the Earth and all its territories as his own. And if the Doctor succeeded, then all of this would be irrelevant, and the Earth and all of his officers, his staff, support personnel and rank-and-file troopers and the rest of the human race would join him and Dusha in a new life. In an embrace of solar flame. [Pg.170]

Should the research worker of the future discover some means of releasing this energy in a form which could be employed, the human race will have at its command powers beyond the dreams of science fiction but the remote possibility must always be considered that the energy once liberated will be completely uncontrollable and by its intense violence detonate all neighboring substances. In this event the whole of the hydrogen on the earth might be transformed at once and the success of the experiment published at large to the universe as a new star. [Pg.199]

The eye scrutinizes me and holds me in thrall. He iS slightly threatening and feels like a sea mammal, but not a regressive vision to an earlier stage of evolution. On the contrary, he seems to be from the future, or at least he seems more evolved than the human race. I fear being in the presence of something much more powerful and more evolved than I a god ... [Pg.262]

He died on October 22, 1986. [Pg.262]

Because I don t live in either my past or my future. I m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you ll be a happy man. You ll see that there is life in the desert, that there are stars in the heavens, and that tribesmen fight because they are part of the human race. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we re living right now."... [Pg.43]

Experimental evidence is accumulating to show that resistance can be altered and controlled, particularly by attention to pre-eruptive feeding (59). The fluoride story is the best known part of this development, but only one part. Such findings, early though they are, provide substantial hope of a human race eventually free from decay of the teeth. This is fortunate, for the carbohydrates form the backbone of our human diet throughout the world. All present indications are that we must depend even more heavily upon sugars and starches in the future. [Pg.123]

And what is to be the future of the human race, as arranged by psychiatrists Well, of course that will really depend on their masters. Give us a healthy world, in the full sense, declares Sargent Shriver, former director of the Peace Corps, and subsequently director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, and Communism w ill disappear from the earth in every sense. - This, of course, is not the goal of Lebedev and his Soviet employers. Nor, as we shall see, is it the goal of the American community mental health workers. Indeed, by juxtaposing Shriver s views on mental health and... [Pg.221]

Brock Chisholm, director of General Medical Services in the Canadian army during World War II, and general secretary of the United Nations World Health Organization With the other human sciences, psychiatry must now decide what is to be the immediate future of the human race. No one else can. And this is the prime responsibility of psychi-atry. i ... [Pg.316]

We acknowledge the views of those among us who favour a policy of isolation, and will retain it as an option should it appear the possessed are gaining the upper hand. But to be left alone in the universe after the possessed remove the Adamist planets and asteroids they have conquered is not a future we consider to be optimum. This threat must be faced in conjunction with the entire human race. We are the problem, we must cure ourselves. [Pg.140]

You see " Andre said. "This is the kind of charter to be proud of. If the Organization is right we will have helped to secure the future of the entire human race. How can you object "... [Pg.356]

A reasonable assumption. One hopes the future of the human race does not rest on a single misinterpreted sentence. [Pg.378]

I shall divide the area that I propose to cover into nine great stages and in a tenth I shall venture to offer some observations on the future destiny of the human race. [Pg.56]

This discovery was finally transmitted to the Greeks, that race which has exercised such a powerful and happy influence over the progress of humanity, to whom genius opened all the ways of truth and whom nature had prepared and fate destined to be the benefactor and guide of every nation in every age, an honour which up to that time no other people had shared. One alone has since been able to conceive the hope of presiding over a new revolution in the destiny of the human race. Nature and the concatenation of events seem to have reed amongst themselves to reserve this glory for her. But let us not seek to penetrate what the uncertain future still hides from our eyes. [Pg.75]

Our hopes for the future condition of the human race can be subsumed under three important heads the abolition of inequality between nations the progress of equality within a single people and the true perfection of man. Will all nations one day attain that state of civilisation which the most enlightened, the freest and the least burdened by prejudices, such as the French and the Anglo-Americans, have attained already Will the vast gulf that separates these peoples from the slavery of nations under the rule of monarchs, from the barbarism of African tribes, from the ignorance of savages, little by little disappear ... [Pg.174]

Among species for which cultural information can be taught and learned, the notion that memes have become powerful forces for survivability rivaling, or oven overshadowing, genes is not very far-fetched. It seems likely that the future of the human race will depend on its ability to discover new information and to transfer that information to others. This is the ultimate response to new environmental challenges. [Pg.259]
