Nature of the Concept (Coordinatoclathrate Concept) and Basic Host Design... 

As a start to a tetralogy on dendrimers, the volumes Dendrimers and Den-drimers II have already appeared in print. This mini-series continues now with the latest volume Dendrimers III and will be completed by the fourth volume Dendrimers IV within the next few months. Volume III offers dendrimers based on novel design concepts leading to highly stiffened and shape persistent dendritic structures as well as to new families of rather soft and floppy dendrimers and focuses on new functional properties and materials aspects. As an example, the question of host-guest interactions with dendrimers, whose existence has been under intense debate for a long time, finds its final - and positive - answer in this volume. As a consequence, dendrimers clearly represent a subset of supramolecular chemistry. 

We now can prepare, in principle, enzyme models by use of the concept of host design, where artificial enzymes are so designed as multiple recognition hosts schematically shown in Fig. 20. Although unsubstituted cyclodextrins are well known to catalyze some organic reactions such as ester hydrolysis, their catalytic activities are relatively small. Perhaps the most important concepts in supramolecular host design and preorganisation and complementarity, which encapsulate more traditional concepts such as the macrocyclic effect. 

This section has presented a brief review of some of the important kinetic concepts encountered in reactor analysis, modeling, and control. These concepts must be understood within the context of how they affect reactor temperature control and other aspects of reactor control. We recognize that many excellent reference books on chemical reaction engineering are available. These books cover the topic of kinetics and a host of other reactor design concepts in extensive depth. Our intention is not to attempt to provide anything like the scope of that material, so we assume some familiarity with it. A short list of excellent reference books includes... 

The second volume which is scheduled to appear soon will concentrate mainly on design concepts and structural aspects of new host molecules and inclusion compounds.
