Hormone androgens

Steroid hormones can be subdivided into sex hormones (androgens, estrogens, and progestins) and corticosteroids (glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids).

A sex difference in the toxicity of chloroform to the kidney occurs in mice. Male animals are more sensitive than females. The reason is that chloroform is metabolized more rapidly in male mice than females and this is affected by male hormones (androgens). 

This chapter discusses the pharmacology of the steroid hormones that are produced by the adrenal cortex. The two primary types of adrenal steroids are the glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Small amounts of other steroids such as the sex hormones (androgens, estrogens, and progestins) are also produced by the adrenal cortex. These steroids are discussed in Chapter 30.
