Degumming can be carried out both below ( low temperature ) and above atmospheric pressure ( high temperature ) during the latter the yield of degummed fibre tends to be low (about 75% on washed decorticated fibre). This equipment contains no external feed or withdrawal mechanism, other than the withdrawal of distillate at the outlet from the reflux tube. In principle, distillation is continued until the vat is exhausted - i.e. until all the liquid contained in the vat has gone. The study presented below is the theory of the true boiling point (TBP) curve used by American Petroleum Engineers. This curve represents the variations in the temperature of the distillate in the vapor state at the top of the column as a function of the fraction of the vat s contents having been vaporized. Polyvinyl chloride polymers are commonly made into compounds by the addition of plasticizers, which are liquids that have high boiling points and dissolve the resin at elevated temperatures. The plasticizers are attracted to the polar portions of the chain and have the same effect as elevated temperature on the polymer. The softening point is lowered and the plasticized PVC compounds are elastomers at room temperature. The strong chain interaction and the viscous nature of the plasticizers cause the response to be damped so that the deformation and the recovery are slowed. This makes the materials interesting substances for use in vibration damping, but limits true elastomer applications. [Pg.15]
