Colorants have been developed for special effects. Pearlescent or iridescent give an attractive appearance. They are often used for coating paper (e.g., cosmetic packaging). The pigment consists of thin platelets, less than 1 pm thickness, which have a high refractive index, e.g., mica coated with Ti02. 

Iron Oxide-Mica. Iron(III) oxide is suitable, like titanium dioxide, for coating of mica platelets. It combines a high refractive index (metallic luster) with good hiding power and weather resistance. 

A flexible optical fiber has a high-refractive-index, transparent core enclosed in a lower-refractive-index, transparent cladding (Figure 20-18a). The cladding is enclosed in a protective plastic jacket. The core and the coating can be made from glass or polymer. 

The core may be a solid or a liquid, or indeed a gas but this is unusual in the context of release applications. Hollow particles have found applications in other areas such as surface coatings, where they offer a high refractive index contrast with film itself, and therefore good light scattering properties. U.S. production of methyl methacrylate in 1999 totaled 1.4 billion lb, which is about 82 percent of world capacity. Cerium oxide has a high refractive index, and is an opacifying agent in enamel compositions [28] used as protective coatings on metals.
