High pressure ion chromatography

High Pressure Ion Chromatography is a relatively recent (1975) and immensely significant development of conventional ion exchange chromatography by Small and co-workers of The Dow Chemical Company. This technique has revolutionized instrumental wet chemical analysis in that micro-amounts of an ion or mixtures of ions may be separated and assessed quantitatively in a matter of minutes compared with hours using traditional techniques. Accurate volumetric dispensing methods means that a quantitative analysis of ions may be achieved whatever their initial concentration.

The use of separation techniques, such as gel permeation and high pressure Hquid chromatography interfaced with sensitive, silicon-specific aas or ICP detectors, has been particularly advantageous for the analysis of siUcones in environmental extracts (469,483—486). Supercritical fluid chromatography coupled with various detection devices is effective for the separation of siUcone oligomers that have molecular weights less than 3000 Da. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-sims) is appHcable up to 10,000 Da (487).

Shultz and Mathis [39] developed an ion-selective electrode detector for high-pressure ion-exchange chromatography. The detector was based on a commercial liquid-membrane ion-selective electrode, and was sensitive to nanomole amounts of inorganic and organic species. These electrodes have much potential for the analysis of ionizable species in column effluents.
