[50] have investigated catalysis of the Heck reaction by palladium salts and complexes in room-temperature ionic liquids. On dissolution of palladium ethanoate in [BMIMj and N-butylpyridinium ([BP] ) hexafluorophos-phate and tetrafluoroborate ionic Hquids, and triethyl-hexyl ammonium bis(trifluo-romethanesulfonyl)imide, a gradual change from ethanoate coordination to the formation of palladium metal was observed in the Pd K-edge EXAFS, as shown in Figure 4.1-13.

The alkyl chain in such MCI reactions need not be restricted to the alkynyliodonium component. For example, the treatment of sodium 2-n-hexyl- 1,3-indandionate with 1-propynyl(phenyl)iodonium tetrafluoroborate in THF affords the spiro-nonene system shown in equation 4228. 

Because the hydrogen atom and phenyl group migrate so readily, the reactions of / -dicarbonyl enolates with ethynyl- and (phenylethynyl)iodonium salts can be expected to result in alkynylation. It has already been noted that the 2- -hexyl-l,3-indandionate ion undergoes alkynylation with (phenylethynyl)phenyliodonium tetrafluoroborate (equation 43), despite the availability of the -hexyl group for [2 + 3] annulation. Ethynylations of six / -dicarbonyl enolates and the anion of 2-nitrocyclohexane with ethynyl(phenyl)-iodonium tetrafluoroborate in THF have also been reported27. For example, admixture of the ethynyliodonium salt and the anion of ethyl 2-cyclopentanone-l-carboxylate in THF affords the 1-ethynyl derivative in 71% isolated yield (equation 124)27. 

The aldol reactions were also p>erformed in ionic liquid solvents namely N,N-diethyl-N -hexyl-N -methyl-N",N"dipropylguanidinimn iodide and the commercially available 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmimJpFJ (Shah, Khan et al. 2009). Equimolar ratios of cyclohexanone and 4-bromobenzaldehyde were used and the reaction mixture was extracted with diethyl ether. The guanidinium salt gave improved results than the neat reaction. Application of the commercially available [bmimjpFJ resulted in a rapidly diminishing enantioselectivity for the recycling. 

The beneficial effects of several ionic liquids as mobile phase additives in HPLC using an electrochemical detection for the determination of heterocyclic aromatic amines have been evaluated (2). The tested ionic liquids were l-butyl-3-methyhmidazolium tetrafluoroborate, l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and... 

The compounds l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMlm][BF4]), l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([B-Mlm][BF4]), l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([H-Mlm][BF4]) and l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMlm]-[Br]) were used as ionic liquids. Some of these compounds are shown in Figure 1.7. Some properties are summarized in Table 1.3.
