Figure 3.16 Volcano plot for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for various pure metals and metal overlayers. Values are calculated at 1 barof H2 (298K) and at a surface hydrogen coverage of either 0.25 or 0.33 ML. The two curved lines correspond to the model (3.24), (3.25) transfer coefficients (not included in the indicated equations) of 0.5 and 1.0, respectively, have also been added to the model predictions in the figure. The current values for specific metals are taken from experimental data on polycrystalline pure metals, single-crystal pure metals, and single-crystal Pd overlayers on various substrates. Adapted from [Greeley et al., 2006a] see this reference for more details. Figure 3.16 Volcano plot for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for various pure metals and metal overlayers. The author is deeply grateful to the editor of Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science for granting permission to reprint from the author s article (N3) Figs. 1 to 5 and Tables 1 and 2, and to freely adapt from the text. The author is extremely grateful to Ms. Carol Perello for her painstaking and excellent secretarial support and to Dr. Herbert Spiegel for the opportunity provided to write this article. [Pg.34]

In the weeks and months that followed, Jeanne refined and adapted her stories with virtuosic brilliance. From the outset she adopted the dual roles of victimized orphan and imperious princess of the blood. As a Valois, she insisted on a silver plate to eat off and a feather bed to sleep on. She d had the foresight to sneak off a message to Baroness d Oliva, ordering her to flee the country so as not to risk her life. Poor bewildered Nicole set off for Brussels immediately. Nicolas La Motte and Retaux had already left. Now that Jeanne s accomplices were safely out of the way, she concentrated on blaming the Copt and the cardinal. [Pg.141]

The solitary astronomer with one eye permanently held against the eyepiece of his or her telescope is an image of the past. Today, we see with computer-regulated instruments, using the new techniques of active or adaptive optics. [Pg.40]

The conservative Scottish textile manufacturers were slow to adapt to this new dye, and the leadership of innovation went to French textile manufacturers by default. When Empress Eugenie of France wore mauve in public, it impressed Queen Victoria to wear mauve at her daughter s wedding, so there was a wave of enthusiasm for synthetic dye. Perkin became very successful in commerce, and gave up business for chemistry research later in life. Fie was knighted in 1906, at the 50-year anniversary of his discovery, and died in 1907. Mauve had a short commercial life, as its early success led to further experimentations that produced many better dyes, particularly in Germany. This marked the beginning of the synthetic dye industry, which was the first modern chemical industry. [Pg.27]

Cross-over design trials represent an adaptation of randomized control trials in which each participant acts as his/her own control. In the simplest scenario, each participant will receive either a placebo or the test drug for the first half of the trial and will receive the alternative treatment for the second half. The order of placebo versus test drug for any individual is randomized. Hence, at any time point, approximately half the test participants will be receiving the placebo and the other half the test substance. [Pg.77]

It was reported (14) that the adaptive enzyme from Lactobacillus plantarum could decarboxylate oxaloacetic acid as well as malic acid. However, in the same organism, Nathan (30) carried this work further and showed that the oxaloacetate decarboxylase activity is not related at all to the malic acid-lactic acid transformation activity. She based this conclusion on the ability of malic and oxaloacetic acids to induce oxaloacetate decarboxylase activity as well as malic enzyme activity. In her words,... [Pg.184]

Princeton University Press, 1984. An excellent and extensive discussion of how biochemical processes, including many discussed in this book, are adapted by various types of organisms in fitting themselves for survival under specific and often difficult conditions. [Pg.277]

Each line manager, whether president of the U. S. Area or superintendent of a Chlor-Alkali plant in Brazil, adapts these corporate guidelines appropriately for his or her responsibility. Corporate programs and procedures do not relieve line management of responsibility, but help line management meet it. [Pg.282]

Loss of visual acuity, reduced color vision, and altered light adaptation developed in a 42-year-old woman 2 weeks after she started to take a high protein diet and melatonin 1 mg/day (17). She had also been taking sertraline for the past 4 years. Her vision improved within 2 months of stopping the melatonin and the high protein diet. [Pg.496]
