Ureas, herbicidal

Methabenzthiazuron is a preemergence herbicide, urea derivative and photosynthetic inhibitor that inhibits photosynthetic electron transport at the diuron site . After treatment with this herbicide, the wheat crop showed physiological effects , such as a delayed senescence of leaves, a greening effect and a decrease in carbohydrate content. 

The amine group of 3-arninoben2otrifluoride can be replaced by Cl, Br, I, F, CN, or OH groups by standard dia2oti2ation reactions. Phosgenation gives 3-trifluoromethylphenyhsocyanate [329-01-1/, which can then be converted to the selective herbicide fluometuron [2164-17-2] a substituted urea. Application. 

Urea and uracil herbicides tend to be persistent in soils and may carry over from one season to the next (299). However, there is significant variation between compounds. Bromacil is debrominated under anaerobic conditions but does not undergo further transformation (423), linuron is degraded in a field soil and does not accumulate or cause carryover problems (424), and terbacd [5902-51-2] is slowly degraded in a Russian soil by microbial means (425). The half-hves for this breakdown range from 76 to 2,475 days and are affected by several factors including moisture and temperature. Finally, tebuthiuron apphed to rangeland has been shown to be phytotoxic after 615 days, and the estimated time for total dissipation of the herbicide is from 2.9 to 7.2 years (426). 

HAs have been issued for bromacil, diuron, and fluometuron no occurrence data are available for tebuthiuron or terbacd (295). Chloroxuron [1982-47-4] fenuronTCA [4482-55-7] andnorea [18530-56-8] also are urea herbicides. 

Reaction of / fZ-amyl alcohol with urea in the presence of sulfuric acid gives a monoalkylated urea (61,62). Monoalkyl ureas are used to prepare uracil derivatives which are useful as herbicides, fungicides, and plant growth regulators (61). 

Pesticide Solvent. The majority of organic fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides (qv) are soluble in DMSO, including such difficult-to-solvate materials as the substituted ureas and carbamates (see Fungicides, agricultural Insect control technology Pesticides). Dimethyl sulfoxide forms cosolvent systems of enhanced solubiUty properties with many solvents (109). 

Maleic hydrazide (149), produced on a large scale as a herbicide, can be obtained, according to a patent, from a simple diaziridine, which on an industrial scale could be less expensive than hydrazine hydrate. In the proposed manufacture of diamide (150) from a diaziridine and urea it must be taken into account that the reaction of urea is preceded by solvolytic hydrazine formation, which probably proceeds under the reported conditions (several hours, 70-80 °C, acidic media) (79AHC(24)63). 

Liquid paraffin carbamate and urea herbicides stabilization and enhancement spray solution, 20% in toluene, water investigation [241]... 

Urea herbicides give pale yellow and s-triazines blue chromatogram zones on a colorless background. 

These reactions can be opened up to all substances that can yield aniline derivatives in acid or basic medium. Carbamic acid derivatives, numerous variations of which are used as plant treatment agents, provide a striking application. As do urea herbicides and a variety of drug substances e. g. benzodiazepines or phenylbutazone derivatives.
