Other than a major shake-up of the electrical engineering curriculum, the only way I know to expose them to chemical processing is to teach joint courses that involve both chemical and electrical engineers. We can sneak them through in that context so that they can start to understand some of the principles. 

Herbert Sawin There are two solutions. One, we can produce retrofits like me. I had a surface science background. Two, we can look within our industries for people who have received degrees in chemical engineering and worked in industry and bring them back. The last possibility one might try is similar to what the University of Texas, Austin, has done, and that is to bring in a senior fellow from industry to entice, to cajole, to twist arms and get the faculty interested in the significant problems.
