Hemp string

According to JIS, the grade of cotton string is expressed by a hank number(1 hank=840 yard=768 m) per 1 pound(453.5 g) with an authorized moisture content the grade of hemp string by fibronumber(1 fibro=300 yards=274 m) with a similar moisture content. The authorized moisture... [Pg.176]

Another major type of natural fiber has cellulose as its main component. Cotton, flax, ramie, various hemps, and jute are the most common cellulosic materials used in making string, rope, or cloth of various weights. Wood and the many grasses are other important natural products with a high cellulose content. Any of the books on the subject will amplify the sources, preparation, and use of cellulose. [Pg.329]

Cellulose is a substance of immense economic value because of the industrial uses made of it. As a food stuff it is of importance only in connection with herbivorous animals. The products made from it are numerous but may be considered under two heads. I. The utilization of the fibrous forms of cellulose more or less purified but unchanged chemically, for the manufacture of fabrics or other materials in which the fibre is the important thing. This includes all kinds of cotton linen, hemp and jute goods in the form of thread, string, rope or cloth and also paper of all kinds. II. The transformation of cellulose by chemical change into products which... [Pg.369]

Hemp is used to a large extent in making string and rope for which its marked tensile strength makes it particularly useful. It is also spun into yarns and woven into cloths. The finest varieties, such as those which are cultivated in Italy, bleach well and can be spun alone or with other fibres. The coarser types have a dark colour which prevents them from being used for textiles. [Pg.71]

String, thread and rope—stitching (sacks), tying using hemp, nylon, cotton, etc. [Pg.328]

From the bark of the hemp stems, bast is obtained. The bast fibres are separated mechanically from the woody parts modern separation methods employ enzymes or steam pressure, surfactant or ultrasound processes. The best hemp fibres are obtained from the male plants being very durable. They are used for the manufacture of ropes, cords, nets, strings, yarn, carpets, textiles and sailcloth. The wood is used for the manufacture of insulating material, but it is also well suited for the production of paper, cardboard and cartons, since its lignin content amounts to only 10% (compared to 20-25% from trees). [Pg.298]

Sansevieria. This genus of the Agavaceae is a perennial also known as bowstring hemp from its use in bow strings. The plant is native to tropical Africa... [Pg.8756]
