Aryl mercurials that have been used medicinally include phenylmercuric acetate, phenylmercuric nitrate, nitromersol, thiomersal, merbromin (mercurochrome), and mercurobutol. These compounds are variously used as preservatives in drugs, including vaccines, for skin disinfestation, the treatment of infections of the skin and mucosa, and in contraceptive jellies and hemorrhoidal remedies they have also been used in some cosmetics. The aryl mercurials are better absorbed across the mucous membranes than most inorganic mercury salts. [Pg.2259]

The principal OTC pharmaceutical products include cold remedies, vitamins and mineral preparations, antacids, analgesics, topical antibiotics, antiftingals and antiseptics, and laxatives. Others include suntan products, ophthalmic solutions, hemorrhoidal products, sleep aids, and dermatological products for treatment of acne, dandmff, insect parasites, bums, dry skin, warts, and foot care products (11). Vulnerary. Elder is an effective remedy for relieving hemorrhoids when applied topically as a salve. Elder has been used to treat erysipelas, an acute inflammation caused by strep bacteria that erupts on the skin. Elder has also served humankind well in applications for bums, cuts and wounds. The family Hamamelidaceae consists of 26 genera and about 100 species of shrubs or tress known to contain tannins and iridoids. The leaves are alternate, simple, and often palmately lobed. The flowers are small and appear in spikes. The fruits are woody, capsular, and scepticidal. In Western medicine, the dried leaves of Hamamelis virginiana (hamamelis, British Pharmaceutical Codex, 1963), yielding not less that 20% of alcohol (45%)-soluble extractive, have been used as astringents for the treatment of hemorrhoids. Hamamelis water (British Pharmaceutical Codex, 1969) made from the stems has been used as a cooling application to sprains and bruises and as a styptic remedy. It is also used in cosmetics and as active ingredient of eye lotions. [Pg.199]

A 53-year-old Japanese man, who had taken skullcap intermittently for hemorrhoids, developed recurrent interstitial pneumonitis (17). Re-challenge, after he had stopped taking the herbal remedy and had become symptom free, resulted in a high fever and signs and symptoms of interstitial pneumonitis. Transbronchial lung biopsy showed Ijmphocytic alveolitis with eosinophilic infiltration. The symptoms subsided again after withdrawal. [Pg.1987]

Documented effects Preparations of this plant have been approved as a medicinal remedy. An infusion or liquid extract as a component of a tea mixture is used as a very strong diuretic for patients with kidney or heart diseases, to treat inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract, to stop stomach, intestinal, hemorrhoidal, and uterine bleeding, and as a treatment for pleurisy and some types of tuberculosis (Khalmatov et al. 1984). The compounds onitin-9-O-glucoside and luteolin, isolated from the plant, exhibited hepatoprotective activity in vitro, as well as strong superoxide scavenging effects (Oh et al. 2004). [Pg.104]

Traditional use This species is gathered in autumn or early spring. An infusion or decoction of the underground parts is used to treat cystitis, diabetes, jaundice, respiratory catarrh, bone tuberculosis, rheumatism, and hemorrhoids, and is used as a vermifuge, hemostatic for uterine bleeding, and to improve the appetite.
