Health danger

In the first environment, we are concerned with the potential health risks that chemicals pose to the public, as well as possible impacts on the ecology. In the latter case, we are concerned with indoor air quality and its possible adverse impacts on the health and safety of the workforce. In both cases the health dangers may be either acute, or long-term chronic health risks. We will first discuss general concepts of air pollution and table our discussions on... [Pg.9]

Table III presents selected crises of the 20th century, which ended up representing no health dangers ( fake crisis ). Nevertheless, consumer reactions often exhibited panic-like behaviors, threatening an entire industry (e.g., the U.S. apple industry in the case of the Alar apple scare). Depending on what was done by the institutions to limit the scare, the aftermath was either positive or negative for the industry or type of products involved. Inhalants are not usually used with another illicit substance, though early users of inhalants have, on later surveys, reported early use (before age 18) of other drugs as well marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and hallucinogens. Because some inhalants are flammable, this adds the additional health danger of fire and burns if someone near the abuser lights up to smoke tobacco or marijuana. [Pg.264]

In 2006, the New York City Board of Health told the city s restaurants that they would have to find a way to make french fries, donuts, and many other foods without using trans fats. Tungsten has no essential role in the health of plants, humans, or animals. In moderate amounts, it also presents virmally no health danger. Exposure to tungsten dust or fumes may cause mild irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. [Pg.639]

Toxicologists have developed an array of animal-based tests that are used to assess the toxicity of chemicals and mixtures of chemicals during the last half century. These methods have been adopted by regulatory agencies throughout the world to provide data that are ultimately used to protect public health and to warn chemical users of potential health dangers. For the most part, these methods have provided adequate information for the protection of plant workers and the general public. [Pg.2706]
