Headache actions

Hydrogen sulfide is the only thermodynamically stable sulfane it occurs widely in nature as a result of volcanic or bacterial action and is, indeed, a prime source of elemental 8 (p. 647). It has been known since earliest times and its classical chemistry has been extensively studied since the seventeenth century.H28 is a foul smelling, very poisonous gas familiar to all students of chemistry. Its smell is noticeable at 0.02 ppm but the gas tends to anaesthetize the olefactory senses and the intensity of the smell is therefore a dangerously unreliable guide to its concentration. H28 causes irritation at 5 ppm, headaches and nausea at 10 ppm and immediate paralysis and death at 100 ppm it is therefore as toxic and as dangerous as HCN. [Pg.682]

Cardiac glycosides have a small ratio of toxic to therapeutic concentration. Possible adverse effects are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, headache, drowsiness, colour vision disturbances, sinus bradycardia, premature ventricular complexes, AV-block, bigeminy, atrial tachycardia with AV-Block, ventricular fibrillation. There are several mechanisms relevant for their toxic action (Table 2). [Pg.328]

The oxides of nitrogen are somewhat sol in w, reacting with it in the presence of oxygen to form nitric and nitrous acids. This is the action that takes place deep in the respiratory system. The acids formed are irritants, causing congestion of the throat and bronchi, and edema of the lungs. The acids are neutralized by the alkalies present in the tissues, with the formation of nitrates and nitrites. The latter may cause some arterial dilation, fall in blood press, headache and dizziness, and there may be some formation of methemoglobin. However, the nitrite effect is of secondary importance... [Pg.347]

Ms. Jefferson has been taking phenelzine for depression. She reports having a bad headache at the back of her head. Determine what assessment would be most important to make. Explain what action, if any, you would take. [Pg.292]

An anesthetic gas, cyclopropane has a rapid onset of action and may be used for induction and maintenance of anesthesia Skeletal muscle relaxation is produced with full anesthetic doses. Cyclopropane is supplied in orange cylinders. Disadvantages of cyclopropane are difficulty in detecting the planes of anesthesia, occasional laryngospasm, cardiac arrhythmias, and postanesthesia nausea, vomiting, and headache Cyclopropane and oxygen mixtures are explosive, which limits the use of this gas anesthetic. [Pg.321]

The often severe headaches, common in caffeine withdrawal, appear to be caused by vasodilation of cerebral blood vessels. This action is probably mediated by the action of the methylxanthines on adenosine receptors. [Pg.234]

Sumatriptan is available for oral, intranasal, and SC administration. The SC injection is packaged as an autoinjector device for self-administration by patients. When compared with the oral formulation, SC administration offers enhanced efficacy and a more rapid onset of action (10 vs. 30 minutes). Intranasal sumatriptan also has a faster onset of effect (15 minutes) than the oral formulation and produces similar rates of response. Approximately 30% to 40% of patients who respond to sumatriptan experience headache recurrence within 24 hours a second dose given at the time of recurrence is usually effective. However, routine administration of a second oral or SC dose does not improve initial efficacy rates or prevent subsequent recurrence. [Pg.619]

Eszopiclone has a rapid onset and a duration of action of up to 6 hours. The most common adverse effects are somnolence, unpleasant taste, headache, and dry mouth. It may be taken nightly for up to 6 months. [Pg.830]

Vincamine (91) is the major alkaloid of V. minor, a plant used against headache and vertigo. It exerts a sedative CNS action and produces a fall in blood pressure. The principal activity is a moderate cerebral vasodilation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that i.v. administration of 91 to humans reduces the arterial blood pressure and increases cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption. The improved cerebral hemodynamic conditions significantly and positively affect the state of patients with advanced arteriosclerosis with beneficial effects on memory, concentration, and behavior. It has thereafter been introduced under several trade names as a pharmaceutical in many European countries (232). Vobasine (32) has been widely studied it exhibits a weak CNS depressive, analgesic, and antipyretic action (21). [Pg.134]
