Harvesting methods

Physical appearance, as well as flavor quaUty and strength, can be iafluenced by soil conditions, rainfall, storms, blights, iasects, growing and harvesting methods, storage, etc. AH of these must be considered to evaluate a particular lot and to harvest, seH, or buy the lot and use it ia a food product. 

Regardless of the "harvesting" method, before these vast methane hydrate reserves can become a viable energy source, ways must be found to minimize the impact to the ocean floor and ocean-bottom ecosystems, and to limit the amount of methane escaping into the atmosphere. 

Because of cost/proflt relationships, for example, harvesting methods vary with cultural practices. About 30 percent of the U. S. cotton crop is stripper-harvested. In Texas, more than 80 percent of the cotton is stripper-harvested because of crop culture, low harvesting cost, and high harvesting capacity associated with strippers.

In samples harvested at necropsy requiring extraction from bone, it is best to wash the specimen by gentle rocking agitation in several volumes of a neutral solution (e.g., buffered saline), to remove any residual fragments generated by the harvest method. 

The less labor intensive, but still expensive, harvest method involves waiting for as long as possible, and then picking the botrytized and healthy grapes together as whole bunches. This method is used all over the world in the making new-style botrytized wines. 

Machine picking is the preferred method of harvesting, but the vineyard and the variety must be suited to the requirements of the machines so that the machines will harvest efficiently. Machine-harvesting costs are less than hand picking, but machine harvesting is less efficient in some varieties. There are some varieties that cannot be picked by machine. There is no consistent difference in wine quality between the two harvesting methods, at least as far as sherry-type wines are concerned. 

The quality of an essential oil and its composition have been evaluated in terms of the methods used to extract it from the plant. It will be affected by types of solvent, heat, pressure and time of the processing.
