The first large scale usage of PCAs began in 1932 when they were incorporated as extreme pressure additives in lubricants [5, 6]. Hardie [20] reported world consumption estimates of 38-50 kt/year in 1961, while in 1977, estimates were reported to be about 230 kt/year [12]. Global consumption estimates for 1993... 

The various playa environments include a central salt crust or saline pan, composed of dry salt, commonly halite (Figure 10.3D, E), but in some cases trona (Eugster, 1970), gypsum (Stoertz and Ericksen, 1974) or other sulphates such as mirabilite, epsomite or bloedite. The saline mudflat is typically moist clay to silt with surface salt efflorescences and intrasediment (displacive) evaporite minerals. In some systems, these may be zoned on a broad scale, with more-soluble minerals towards the lowest central portion of the mudflat, caused by groundwater evaporation gradients (e.g. Saline Valley, California Hardie, 1968).

II. 3 The precursor film The clue to the riddle is an experimental study of Hardy 18 who noticed the presence of a very thin film preceding the spreading drops. This film exists even for nonvolatile liquids and has been called the precursor film. It means that the shape of the drop s edge at the macroscopic scale is not Just a magnification of its shape at the microscopic scale. This is due to the presence of interactions whose range is below the macroscopic scale.
