Hansen solubility parameters, HSP

In the context of the TMS investigated here, a mediator was needed with a Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) closer to that of the catalyst solvent than to that of NOP. A detailed database of HSPs can be found in the literature [30-32]. 

More detailed approaches have made use of Hansen solubility parameters (HSP), based on the realization that the heat of vaporization consists of several components arising from van der Waals dispersion forces (D), dipole-dipole interaction (P), and hydrogen bonding (H). The total cohesive energy density is then the sum of the three contributions, and so the overall solubility parameter is... 

Buckley-Smith (2006) discussed the use of solubility parameters to select man-brane materials for PV of organic mixtures. His research showed that Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) are a good screening method for PV manbranes, especially where the molecules being separated are of comparable size. Polymers that have HSP close to the desired component and not to other components tend to have the best selectivity and flux characteristics. However, diffusion is an important factor and is not completely accounted for by HSP.

Adsorbents are chemicals. They are made of carbon which has been oxidized and thermally treated. As such, like other solid, semi-solid, and liquid chemicals, they display values of Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSPs). One can study the incompatibility between solvents produced by correlation of their intermolecular forces as charaderized by and enumerated with Hansen Solubility Parameters. The considerable data of water solubility in many cleaning solvents is a useful database°°°. It can be studied in terms of the separation between water and solvent in "HSP space." The illustrations contained in Table 3.9 allow the compatibility of water with specific cleaning solvents to be visually examined with three-dimensional images , and also the solubility of water in many cleaning solvents to be recognized by measured data (Figure 3.35). 

The solubility parameter may be thought of as a vector in a three-dimensional d-p-h space. The above equation provides the magnitude of this vector. Each solvent and each polymer can be characterized by the three solubility parameter increments , 8, 8p, 8f, due to dispersion, polar and hydrogen bonding forces, respectively. These are often called Hansen solubUity parameters (HSPs).
