Handling characteristics

Another important class of dryer is the fluidized-bed dryers. Some designs combine spray and fluidized-bed dryers. Choice between dryers is usually based on practicalities such as the materials handling characteristics, product decomposition, product physical form (e.g., if a porous granular material is required), etc. Also, dryer efficiency can be used to compare the performance of different dryer designs. This is usually defined as follows -. [Pg.91]

Lead azide is not readily dead-pressed, ie, pressed to a point where it can no longer be initiated. However, this condition is somewhat dependent on the output of the mixture used to ignite the lead azide and the degree of confinement of the system. Because lead azide is a nonconductor, it may be mixed with flaked graphite to form a conductive mix for use in low energy electric detonators. A number of different types of lead azide have been prepared to improve its handling characteristics and performance and to decrease sensitivity. In addition to the dextrinated lead azide commonly used in the United States, service lead azide, which contains a minimum of 97% lead azide and no protective colloid, is used in the United Kingdom. Other varieties include colloidal lead azide (3—4 pm), poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated lead azide, and British RE) 1333 and RE) 1343 lead azide which is precipitated in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose (88—92). [Pg.10]

Potassium bicarbonate is used in foods and medicine. It is approximately twice as effective as NaHC03 in dry-powder fire extinguishers, perhaps because the potassium affects the free-radical mechanism of flame propagation. However, the material does not have good handling characteristics. [Pg.533]

Milling not only provides intimate mixing, but also eliminates variation in ribbon thickness and cmshes lumpy materials, eg, overdried soap, which might impact finished bar texture. Milling is also used for the formation of the proper bar soap crystalline phase, which plays a critical role in both the performance properties of the soap bar and the handling characteristics of the in-process soap. For example, too hot a milling temperature can create sticky soap that is difficult to process further. [Pg.156]

Prior to its addition to the aluminum casting alloys, the strontium metal is usually alloyed into the form of a master alloy. These master alloys are typically 10% Sr—90% A1 or 90% Sr—10% Al, and improve the dissolution and handling characteristics of strontium in the foundry. [Pg.473]

Power to Operate a Screw Conveyor. The power required to operate a screw conveyor is dependent, to a large extent, on the handling characteristics of the material to be transported. Formulas for calculating power use empirically derived factors to account for the conveying characteristics of specific materials, the configuration of the screw, and the beating friction. These formulas have been developed by CEMA and can be found ia the hterature (24,25) and ia engineering handbooks. It is assumed that the total power is equal to the sum of the power required to overcome friction and the power required to transport the material. [Pg.158]

Linear transport velocity of the material is almost proportional to the product of frequency and stroke for these conveyors. However, the transport velocity and the depth that can be obtained with a specific material is dependent on the handling characteristics of that material. Manufacturers have accumulated data banks relating material characteristics to attainable conveying velocities for their proprietary conveyor designs. [Pg.160]

Diying equipment may be classified in several ways. The two most useful classifications are based on (1) the method of transferring heat to the wet solids or (2) the handling characteristics and physical properties of the wet material. The first method of classification revels differences in diyer design and operation, while the second method is... [Pg.1184]

Uhde-Hibemia A process for making a mixed ammonium nitrate - ammonium sulfate fertilizer (ASN) - which is less liable to explode than ammonium nitrate. Sulfuric acid is added to aqueous ammonium nitrate and ammonia gas passed in. The double salt crystallizes out. Additives are used to improve the handling characteristics of the product. Developed by Hibernia and licensed to Friedrich Uhde. See also Victor. [Pg.278]

Today s diesel fuel grades are blends which may contain straight-run distillate, cycle oil, various gas oils, and heavy cracked distillates. Kerosene or jet fuel may be blended into the diesel to improve the low-temperature viscosity and handling characteristics of the fuel. [Pg.54]

Wax crystal modifiers added after wax crystals begin to form will have only minimal affect at modifying the size, shape, and structure of wax crystals. Consequently, little improvement in the low temperature handling characteristics of the fuel will be obtained. [Pg.92]

The pour point test is used to determine the lowest temperature at which a fuel can be effectively pumped. However, the pour point value can be misleading, especially when it is used to determine the low-temperature handling characteristics of residual fuel oil and other heavy fuels. Low-temperature viscosity measurements are considered more reliable than pour point values for determining the flow properties and pumpability of these oils. [Pg.188]

Another common method which is used to improve the handling characteristics of heavy oils is to treat the oils with a wax crystal modifier. The process is similar to that used in diesel fuel treatment. Wax crystal modifiers for use in heavy oils are typically higher in molecular weight than those used in diesel fuel applications. The pour point method ASTM D-97 is also used to evaluate crude oil and heavy oils. [Pg.193]
