Halogen containing unsaturated polyester

AS A FLAME RETARDANT. The zinc borate is an efficient synergist of organic halogen sources. In certain halogen-containing systems such as unsaturated polyester, epoxy (3), and rigid PVC, the zinc borate alone can outperform antimony oxide as shown by the Oxygen Index and UL-94 tests (Fig. 3, 4, and 5). 

Halogen-containing borate ester such as tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)borate [B(OCH2CHBrCH2Br)3] is reportedly used in polyurethanes, unsaturated polyesters, and epoxy novolacs.89 More recently, it was also claimed to be used in cotton textiles.89... 

A large number of halogen-containing reactive diols, polyols, anhydrides, and other functional groups containing intermediates have been used to produce flame-resistant unsaturated polyester resins. Flame-retardant polyester resins have been made by using broraostyrene as partial replacement of styrene for cross-linking (21). 

Any of the feedstock components of unsaturated polyesters may contain flame-retardant element(s). In practice, halogenated carboxylic acids, such as chlorendic acid, or their anhydrides, tetrachloro- or tetrabromophthalic anhydride are more usually introduced as separate components.
