Adverse reactions affecting the user s mental state have been associated with hallucinogenic drugs, and it is likely that Salvia divinorum could produce similar reactions. Neither animal nor human toxicity studies of Salvia divinorum have been done. Very little scientific data exist in regard to adverse effects of the substance on the functioning of the human body. However, hallucinogens have been associated with harmful mental effects. 

In a few persons, some relatively short-term adverse effects were reported after conclusion of the chemical testing (hematuria, hepatitis, and hallucinogenic flashbacks). It Is unclear tdiether these effects resulted from the drug administration or occurred randomly and coincidentally. The extremely low Incidence of such reports makes It doubtful that the anticholinergic test substances played a role In Inducing these effects. However, the data are not sufficient to answer this question with certainty. 

Other adverse effects of LSD and related hallucinogens arc more cause for concern. An important problem has been acute panic or paranoid reactions to the drug. These bad trips can leave individuals in an acute psychotic state during which they may harm themselves or others. The frequency of bad trips is difficult to estimate, but it was high enough in the 1960s to lead to the widespread development of walk-in crisis centers...

Drug overdose Misuse of diphenhydramine appears to be associated with elevated mood, increased energy, and in some cases hallucinogenic effects [14" ]. Diphenhydramine overdose is therefore relatively common, but although it is considered to be relatively non-toxic, serious adverse effects and even death have been reported in adults [15" ]. 

As of 2002, no scientific data exist on the long-term effects of Salvia divinorum on human health. Other hallucinogenic substances have been associated with longterm adverse mental effects. 

It is not known whether the use of Salvia divinorum is associated with long-lasting adverse mental effects in some users. However, such disorders have resulted from the use of other hallucinogenic substances, and it would be reasonable to expect that long-term mental disorders could also develop in certain individuals as a consequence of Salvia consumption.
