Dialkylamino derivatives of elements located in the periodic table to the left or below those listed above cannot be prepared by the above method due to either the ionic character of some of the inorganic halides or the formation of stable metal halide-amine addition products. Therefore, other methods must be applied. Dialkylamino derivatives of tin7 and antimony8 are conveniently obtained by reaction of the corresponding halides with lithium dialkylamides. Others, such as the dialkylamino derivatives of aluminum,9 are made by the interaction of the hydride with dialkylamines. GC has been used extensively for the separation and determination of volatile organic molecules, and most aspects of this application area are fully documented in monographs on this technique. In the inorganic trace analysis area, however, fewer species possess the required volatility, and applications tend to be limited to the separation of volatile species of low molecular weight (such as methyl derivatives of As, Se, Sn, Hg) and the separation of semi-volatile organo-metals, metal halides, metal hydrides, metal carbonyls and metal chelates. The unsubstituted nitrogen atom in 1,2,4-dithiazolidines is more prone to electrophilic reactions. Both the potassium salt 11 and the initial product 12 can participate in alkylation and acylation reactions. Alkylation of salt 11 with alkyl halides is carried out in DMF or MeCN and compound 12 can react with alkyl halides in MeCN in the presence of inorganic bases (NaH, Bu OK, AcONa, NaHCOj, CS2CO3) NaHCO( proved to be the base of choice. Yields of alkylation products 26 in some cases reach 85-90%.
