Hair strontium

Hair Strontium hydroxide has been used as a depilatory [58 ], and it is not therefore surprising that there have been reports of alopecia in patients taking strontium ranelate. Strontium sulfide (SrS) smells like rotten eggs. It is used as a depilatory to remove hair from skin and hides. 

Stable Strontium. All people have small amounts of stable strontium in their bodies, mostly in bone. It can be measured in the blood, hair, feces, or urine. The amount is usually measured by its mass (grams). Measurements in urine can show whether you have been exposed recently to larger-than-normal amounts of strontium. Measurements in hair can reveal whether you were exposed to high amounts of strontium in the past. Most physicians do not test for strontium in their offices, but can collect samples and send them to a special laboratory. Normal x-ray procedures can show changes in bone that may occur from exposure to high amounts of strontium. However, these changes may have other causes (vitamin D deficiency or exposure to an excess of some other trace metal) and the x-ray cannot determine that strontium is involved. 

Stable Strontium. No studies were located that demonstrated cancer effects of stable strontium following oral exposure in humans or animals. In one case-control study, no association was found between the incidence of liver cancer in 1984 on Chongming Island in China, and the levels of stable strontium detected in hair (Wang et al. 1990).

Depilatories epitomize the chemical destruction of hair and allow hair removal by scraping with a blunt instmment or by rubbing with terry cloth. Chemical depilatories are based on 5-6% calcium thioglycolate in a cream base (to avoid runoff) at a pH of about 12. The pH is maintained with calcium or strontium hydroxide. Hair destraction is rapid, requiring not more than about 10 min. Treatment with a depilatory is followed by careful rinsing with water and various conditioning products intended to restore the skin s pH to normal. This type of treatment does not destroy the dermal papilla, and the hair grows back.
