Direct hair dyes

Bicolor shades are achieved by dyeing the hair with acid dyes and fixation at pH 3-3.5. Neutralization to pH 5.5-6 is followed by suede scouring with ammonia and auxiliaries. Dyeing with metal-complex or direct dyes is effected at neutral to weak acid pH. Finally, the dyes are fixed with formic acid at pH 4. [Pg.457]

With direct dyes (see Section 3.3), as opposed to oxidation dyes, the actual dye (and not its precursor) is applied to the hair. It imparts a semipermanent or temporary color that lasts for a variable time. Lightening is not possible. [Pg.479]

Direct dye tints can be removed by washing with shampoo (the rate of removal depending on the type of dye) or, in some cases, by rubbing the hair with ethanol. [Pg.483]

The dyeing process provides for temporary, semipermanent (direct dyes), and oxidation-type reactions (semipermanent or permanent colors). It may involve absorption or adsorption (electrostatic) of the colorant into/to the hair structure, bleaching or otherwise masking the natural melanin col-... [Pg.186]

Several recent scientific studies have been concerned with the application of high-performance liquid chromatography for the analysis of direct dyes in semipermanent hair coloring products primarily for quality control purposes [37, 42]. This technique has been used successfully for the complete separation of 18 dyes in a standard mixture and also for the separation and analysis of these dyes in eight commercial hair color products. [Pg.334]

Another very interesting and less explored field is the color changes observed when anthocyanins are in contact with colorless substances, which are not necessarily copigments, for instance, surfactants, emulsions, gels, proteins, DNA, cotton, wool, hair and so on (Bicard, 1999). For hair coloring, anthocyanins could be alternatives to existing synthetic systems and generate new direct dyes for hair (cationic dyes). [Pg.17]

The term semipermanent defines hair color products that give a coloration lasting through 5-6 shampoos. This system uses so-called direct dyes which penetrate into the cortex but slowly diffuse out again when the hair is washed. The depth of coverage is limited and no lightening of color can take place. Nitro and anthraquinone dyes are used mainly, and azobenzenes less frequently. The color produced by a particular commercial product may result from the combination of many individual dyes, e.g., three yellows, two reds, two... [Pg.106]
