Haemorrhagic gastritis

GIT Acute erosive gastritis and haemorrhage. Peptic ulcer risk is increased. 

Gastric mucosa. Injury occurs because alcohol allows back diffusion of acid from the gastric lumen into the mucosa. After an acute binge the mucosa shows erosions and also petechial haemorrhages (recovery may take 3 weeks) and up to 60% of chronic alcoholics show chronic gastritis. 

In the absence of pre-existing peptic ulceration, major bleeding from aspirin is usually associated with acute haemorrhagic erosive gastritis (91, 92, 94 ). 

Acute haemorrhagic erosive gastritis was diagnosed by endoscopy in 74 of 400 consecutive patients admitted with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage. A history of antecedent consumption of salicylate ingestion was obtained in 47%. In some cases there were associated gastric ulcers, sometimes multiple (92 ). 

Gastrointestinal disturbances are the most frequent side effects of indomethacin. Endoscopic examination of the stomach in healthy volunteers taking 100 mg of indomethacin daily for 7 days revealed extensive gastritis with submucosal haemorrhages, oedema, and erosions (35 ). Of 1261 adverse reactions to indomethacin reported to the U.K, Committee on Safety of Medicines, there were 121 instances of gastrointestinal bleeding with 25 fatalities (21 ).
