Gypsum-containing materials

Drywall panels are made from a compressed rock known as gypsum. Since gypsum contains water (bound in crystalline form) the material is considered to provide some protection against fire. [Pg.224]

Ores which comprise a variety of minerals are, as a rule, heterogeneous. An ore body is usually named for the most important mineral (s) in the rock, referred to as value minerals, mineral values, or simply values. Some minerals contain metals, which are extracted by concentration and smelting. Other minerals, such as diamond, asbestos (qv), quartz (see Silicon COMPOUNDS), feldspars, micas (see Mica), gypsum, soda, mirabillite, clays (qv), etc, maybe used either as found, with some or no pretreatment, or as stock materials for industrial compounds or building materials (qv) (3). [Pg.392]

Much building material has been derived from two monomineral sedimentary rocks gypsum (composed of hydrated calcium sulfate) and limestone, which consists of calcite (composed mostly of calcium carbonate). Freshwater and seawater contain dissolved calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate. Most limestone and gypsum are formed when, as a consequence of the evaporation of water, calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate precipitate out of the water solutions as either gypsum or limestone. Various well-known industrial and municipal waste products particularly those from the base metal industry, contain appreciable amounts of Fe oxides which may make them suitable for remediation purposes. Two examples from industry are the residues from the alumina and the titanium industries. The extraction of either Al or Ti from the natural ores (bauxite and ilmenite/rutile, respectively) leaves behind an alkaline and acidic (sulphuric) residue, respectively, in which Fe oxides are enriched, as indicated by their names Red Mud and Red Gypsum . A sample of Red gypsum is reported to contain ca. 35% of Fe oxide consisting of goethite and hematite, half of which was oxalate soluble (Fauziah et al., 1996). Most of the dissolved calcium in groundwater in northern Wisconsin is the result of silicate hydrolysis of the aquifer materials. The assumption of conservancy is accurate only because of the relatively slow rates of silicate dissolution. The presence of more soluble calcium-containing minerals, such as calcite or gypsum, would invalidate assumptions of conservancy and would lead to significant errors in solute budgets. [Pg.93]
