Equipment Selection Criteria and Guidelines A number of factors should be considered in order to determine when to select a blowdown drum, cyclone separator, or quench tank to handle a multiphase stream from a relief device. Among these are the plot plan space available, the operating limitations of each type, and the physicochemical properties of the stream.

In each case the evaluation of a flowsheet is done very crudely, with such guidelines as minimum mass flow into separation tasics being used. Of course such crude evaluation is all that can be done in the preliminary stages because one is not able to evaluate on an economic basis until the process is fully synthesized and the equipment selected these programs stop short of selecting actual equipment. 

Many types of particulate collection devices are available commercially (see Table 53.2). Each operates on a different principle for accomplishing removal of particulates from the gas stream. Four basic types are common in drying systems (1) the drying vessel itself (in the case of vessel dryers), (2) cyclones, (3) bag filters, and (4) wet scrubbers. Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are not used widely in drying installations in spite of their low-pressure drop and high collection performance. The initial cost of purchase and construction is high. For this reason, the emphasis in Section 53.3 will be on the three most widely used devices, e.g., cyclones, fabric filters, and wet scrubbers. Part Three includes chapters that provide instruction and examples of the design of heat exchangers, multistage and packed towers, and pumps, compressors, and expanders. In addition, Chapter 16 provides guidelines for selecting processing equipment and equations for estimating the purchase costs of a broad array of equipment items. Furthermore, Section 16.7 shows how to use the Aspen Icarus Process Evaluator (IPE), with the process simulators, to estimate purchase costs and the total permanent investment for a chemical plant.

The use of personal protective equipment is very important in spill situations because response personnel face exposure to chemicals that could cause serious injury or illness. The hazards are accentuated by the unknown physical environment of the spill site and the random nature of spills. The multiple hazards of spill sites distinguish such incidents from spills in the laboratory or exposure to chemicals in the workplace. Spill responders entering a site cannot always predict what chemicals or concentrations they will encounter and what other hazards may be present. There is also a lack of standards and guidelines for selecting and using personal protective equipment for chemical spill emergency situations. Most standards are written for use in the workplace and may not be fully applicable to emergency situations.
