Growth-inhibitory action

Relatively few sites of growth-modifying or growth-inhibitory action have been identified at the cellular and molecular level. Consequently, the exact action of, and relationships between, auxins, gib-berellins, kinins, and growth inhibitors remain to be elucidated. 

Audus and Quastel (4) have found that the presence of p-aminobenzoic acid exerts an antagonism, though a relatively feeble one, to the root growth inhibitory actions of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2-chloro-4-methylphenoxyacetic acid, 2-naphthoxyacetic acid, and 2-indoleacetic acid. For any marked degree of antagonism the concentration ratio of p-aminobenzoic acid to the growth substance must be of the order of 10,000. The methanolic extract of the leaves of P. gracilior (Kenya) caused mortality within 12 days after incorporation into a meridic artificial diet of several lepidopterous pest species. Cerulenin possesses a remarkable growth-inhibitory action on many strains of mycobacteria. Furthermore, it inhibits significantly the growth of several yeast-like fungi. 

Though Vd is considerably active in the pea-test, its main characteristic is that of a root auxin , viz. its ability to promote elongation of roots and to counteract the growth-inhibitory action of lAA. In this respect it is an antiauxin, for which reason we will come back to its action under this heading (Section 12).
