The Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), a directorate of AIChE, was established in 1985 to develop and disseminate technical information for use in the prevention of major chemical accidents. The CCPS is supported by a diverse group of industrial sponsors in the chemical process industry and related industries who provide the necessary funding and professional guidance for its projects. The CCPS Technical Steering Committee and the technical subcommittees oversee individual projects selected by CCPS. Professional representatives of the sponsoring companies staff the subcommittees, with a member of the CCPS staff coordinating the activities of the sub-committee. 

This suggests that in otganizing the assessment task, you may want to identify as broad a group of qualified individuals as possible, and be prepared to provide them with detailed guidance. This may help you accommodate last-minute scheduling problems while assuring consistent quality. 

Once you have selected the quantities of material, hazard criteria, and representative materials, consequence models can determine the potential hazard zone. Generally, several of the releases will be very similar and it may be possible to reduce the number of modelling runs by grouping similar releases together. The modelling package you choose will provide guidance on how to set up and run the models.

The guidance notes can be produced either as a composite handbook containing task instmctions for all types of plant and equipment for each trade group, or as specific task/advice notes for each asset of the service requirements of the plant equipment. When used, the handbook method provides the necessary work instructions for all similar types of plant and equipment throughout the location. This method of operation reduces the number of task/advice notes issued and therefore the system s workload, as well as the demands placed on the administration of the system. Either method eliminates the requirement of entering work instmctions, etc. on the work docket/advice notes before they are issued. 

At the end of the book, group leaders and teachers will find a list of useful organizations and websites, which offer further advice and guidance on the teaching of those issues covered by the exercises in this volume. 

The quiz sheets should be copied and handed out to the participants, and time allowed for them to answer the questions. The teacher or group leader should then go through the answers with the participants using the guidance notes below. Many of the questions will prompt discussion of the question itself and a number of associated issues. This is intended, and should be encouraged. 

The following guidance notes pertaining to each situation and the alternative courses of action provided are not intended to be comprehensive and exhaustive. Many of the positive and negative aspects of any of the courses of action will be self-evident, and may arise out of group discussions. The notes are intended as guidance only.
