In 1967, work was presented from a Sheffield group on indexing chemical reactions for database budding. In 1969, a Harvard group presented its first steps in the development of a system for computer-assisted synthesis design. Soon afterwards, groups at Brandeis University and TU Munich, Germany, presented their work in this area. [Pg.11]

On the premise that phosphodiesterase inhibitors also inhibit the production of cytokines, milrinone has been used in the treatment of nine patients with the systemic inflammatory response sjmdrome and compared with seven patients with congestive heart failure (4). As computing capabiUty has improved, the need for automated methods of determining connectivity indexes, as well as group compositions and other stmctural parameters, for existing databases of chemical species has increased in importance. New naming techniques, such as SMILES, have been proposed which can be easily translated to these indexes and parameters by computer algorithms. Discussions of the more recent work in this area are available (281,282). One of the most useful publications is the series of abstracts published by the Chromatography Discussion Group of Great Britain (20). These have been published annually since 1958 and two five-year cumulative indices are available. The major feature of the abstracts is the comprehensive index at the back of each volume. This series of abstracts is so valuable that it should be readily available to anyone working in GC.
