The flowsheet synthesis of continuous chemical-like process can be performed following a systematic strategy known as the hierarchical approach. The procedure, initially proposed by Jim Douglas and coworkers in the decade 1980-90 [1, 2], describes the conceptual design process as a logical sequence of analysis and synthesis steps grouped in levels. Each level involves a flowsheet development mechanism based on design decisions. The result is not a unique solution but a collection of alternative flowsheets from which an evaluation procedure eliminates the less attractive ones. [Pg.21]

Pyrethroids. More accurately described as the synthetic pyrethroids, this group of compounds has been used extensively in wood preservation for control of both beetles and termites. Activity, cost and performance characteristics vary depending upon the specific compound but most readily accepted for use in wood preservative formulations are permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, bifenthrin and cyfluthrin. In terms of activity against wood boring beetles, cyfluthrin is estimated to be 20 times more effective than permethrin, 10 times as effective as cypermethrin and twice as effective as deltamethrin when compared in laboratory evaluative procedures. However, in practice other factors need to be considered, particularly the relative vapour pressures (and therefore evaporative loss) and, in wood in soil contact, the rate of biotransformation by colonising bacteria. The pyrethroids are effective as neurotoxins, and are axonic poisons. [Pg.436]

An economic evaluation is carried out by using the standard measures of profitability, such as payback period or discounted cash flow techniques (internal rate of return and net present value). Each company uses its own economic evaluation procedures and criteria for selecting projects for implementation. In performing the economic evaluation, planners must consider various costs and savings. As in any project, cost elements can be grouped into capital costs and operating costs. [Pg.24]
