Enzymes are obtained from plants, animals and micro-organisms by extraction with a suitable solvent, preferably after the cell structure has been destroyed by drying or grinding. They can be purified by precipitation and resolution and by fractional absorption and elution. Many enzymes have been obtained crystalline. [Pg.158]

Cobalt(Il) dicobalt(Ill) tetroxide [1308-06-17, Co O, is a black cubic crystalline material containing about 72% cobalt. It is prepared by oxidation of cobalt metal at temperatures below 900°C or by pyrolysis in air of cobalt salts, usually the nitrate or chloride. The mixed valence oxide is insoluble in water and organic solvents and only partially soluble in mineral acids. Complete solubiUty can be effected by dissolution in acids under reducing conditions. The technique of trituration is frequently useful. The organic product is stripped of solvent and the oily residue is placed in a mortar and covered with a layer of a solvent in which it is only slightly soluble. The mass is ground with a pestle mixing in the solvent as thoroughly as possible. Infrared spectra for solid organic compounds are frequently obtained by mixing and grinding a small sample of the material with specially dry and pure potassi um bromide (the carrier), then compressing the powder in a special metal die under a pressure of 15 30 tonnes to produce a transparent potassium bromide disc. As the potassium bromide has virtually no absorption in the middle-infrared region, a very well-resolved spectrum of the organic compound is obtained when the disc is placed in the path of the infrared beam. [Pg.755]
