Aging MnS04/urea solutions yielded directly crystalline cubic MnC03 (rhodo-chrosite) particles (Fig. 7.1.3) (27). Interestingly, Hamada et al. obtained the same kind of dispersions by reacting solutions of MnS04 and NHjHC03 (29). [Pg.388]

FIG. 1.13 Spherical and cubic model particles with crystalline or amorphous microstructure (a) spherical zinc sulfide particles (transmission electron microscopy, TEM, see Section 1.6a.2a) x-ray diffraction studies show that the microstructure of these particles is crystalline (b) cubic lead sulfide particles (scanning electron microscopy, SEM, see Section 1.6a.2a) (c) amorphous spherical particles of manganese (II) phosphate (TEM) and (d) crystalline cubic cadmium carbonate particles (SEM). The interaction of molybdenum and bismuth ethoxides is also accompanied by ether elimination and the crystallization of a crystalline cubic phase of approximate composition Bi203 3Mo03. The mixed solutions of bismuth and tungsten ethoxides and those of molybdenum and bismuth 2-methoxyethox-ides turned out to be more stable. The occurrence of the interaction between the components was revealed by their tremendously increased solubility in the presence of each other (see Fig. 8.1 h). [Pg.433]

The above discussion considers a model for the stmcture of the crystalline cubic R-AlsCuTis. Now consider possible perturbations in this model to give the quasicrystalline T2-Al5CuTi3. In this coimection, the 54-vertex Mackay icosahedron (Figure 2) appears as a structural unit in certain quasicrystals. The Mackay icosahedron has a shell stmcture consisting of the following layers ... [Pg.4004]

For example, an alloy that contains equal amounts of two metals may have phases called austentite and martensite. In the austentite phase, the metal ions are arranged in a rigid crystalline cubic structure. In the martensite phase, the metal ions are arranged in a more flexible structure. [Pg.412]
