Griffith Still

Analysis is most efficient with a Griffith Still which consists of a series of six stills connected together with a master electrical control. An experienced operator can run 40 samples/h (Griffith and Jeffery 1948 Griffith 1957). The Griffith method is an AO AC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists)-approved method for determination of total alkaloids in tobacco (Williams 1984). Steam distillation is not the method of choice for determining secondary alkaloids which include nornicotine, anabasine, anatabine, and myosmine. In cases where individual alkaloids in a sample must be analyzed, steam distillation is not dependable. However, in cases where total alkaloids determined as nicotine will suffice, steam distillation is adequate and the use of more sensitive equipment is not necessary. [Pg.140]

Total alkaloids in tobacco are commonly determined spectrophotometrically. The Griffith Still Method (Griffith 1957) utilizes a steam distillation apparatus based on that of Willits et al. (1950) absorbance is measured at 236, 259, and 282 nm. Automated methods such as those of Harvey et al. (1969) and Davis (1976) are more commonly used today. Pyridyl moieties react with cyanogen bromide and aniline to form a chromophore measurable at 460 nm. [Pg.154]

Studies carried out on Earth, for example, by the NASA infrared telescope on Mauna Kea (Hawaii), showed albedo variations which indicated the presence of holes in the Titanian cloud formations (Griffith, 1993). The Fluent code with the RSM turbulence model, predict very well the pressure drop in cyclones and can be used in cyclone design for any operational conditions (Figs. 3, 5, 7 and 8). In the CFD numerical calculations a very small pressme drop deviation were observed, with less than 3% of deviation at different inlet velocity which probably in the same magnitude of the experimental error. The CFD simulations with RNG k-e turbulence model still yield a reasonably good prediction (Figs. 3, 5, 7 and 8) with the deviation about 14-20% of an experimental data. It considerably tolerable since the RNG k-e model is much less on computational time required compared to the complicated RSM tmbulence model. In all cases of the simulation the RNG k-< model considerably underestimates the cyclone pressme drop as revealed by Griffiths and Boysan [8], However under extreme temperature (>850 K) there is no significant difference between RNG k-< and RSM model prediction. [Pg.338]
