A unique method of formulating delivery systems based on starch/ PLA systems was studied (138). In that approach, the goal was to provide a better matrix for delivery of high molecular weight hydrophilic molecules. A hydrophilic material, starch, was combined through graft polymerization to PLA. The carbolactic polymers were then used to entrap bovine serum albumin in microspheres. [Pg.30]

For internal graft polymerization or grafting on to polymers reactive to radical attack, inhibition by oxygen is not a serious problem. However, surface photografting of polyolefins in an open system is very inefficient. The results in Figure 13 indicate that oxygen diffused through or in OPP film is an efficient retarder. [Pg.237]

A laser beam was used for graft polymerization of AAc onto a tetrafluo-roethylene-perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether copolymer film [81]. The film placed in contact with AAc solution was irradiated with KrF laser through the film to excite the film/solution interface. Surface composition of the grafted film determined by XPS revealed an extensive loss of fluorine atom and an increase of oxygen atom in addition to the presence of a Cls line shape, similar to that of AAc monomer. Mirzadeh et al. [82] used pulsed laser beam for the graft polymerization of AAm on a rubber surface in the presence of a photosensitizer, ben-zophenone, or AIBN. [Pg.14]

PEG molecules which are relatively nontoxic and capable of reducing the interaction between the blood components and man-made materials, can be also tethered to a polymer surface through surface grafting. This has been achieved by free-radical polymerization of methacrylate monomers carrying a pendant PEG chain [71-73]. For instance, the surface of a PU film was subjected to UY-induced graft polymerization of methoxy-PEG methacrylate monomers with numbers of ethylene glycol (EG) units of 4, 9, and 23 [74]. As shown in Fig. 14, the monomer with the shortest PEG length of only 4 EG... [Pg.349]

Persulfate-bisulfite-initiated graft polymerization was accomplished (Table I) using the procedure of Feairheller et al (11). Lyophilized rat skins were soaked in 100 ml of a 0.4% aqueous solution of an octyl-phenyl ether of polyethylene glycol containing 9-10 ethylene oxide groups. After 1 hr, 0.4 g potassium persulfate and 0.135 g sodium bisulfite were added, and CO2 was passed through the solution before 5 ml of monomer were added. [Pg.182]
