LGC has a strong interest in the quality of analytical measurements and played a lead role in the development of the UK s initiative on Valid Analytical Measurement (VAM). This is a programme supported by the UK government as part of the DTI programmes supporting the national measurement system. 

In the past decade, the vision of a hydrogen-fuelled future has gained remarkable momentum with US policymakers and industry. The US Federal government pledged its support for hydrogen research, development and implementation when it announced a five-year, 1.2 billion programme that included the FreedomCar and... 

Some sectors of industry are already developing practical programmes on substitution. At the same time, expertise exists within the European Union to helpsmall and medium companies implement safer products and processes. Some governments, such as in Sweden and Denmark, already provide technical and other support to companies to help them identify safer substitutes to harmful chemicals. 

We would like to apologize to those scientists whose work may not have appeared in this review either due to the limited scope of the review or oversight. Note that there will not be a common European interest in a scheme, unless it forms part of a transnational European programme supported jointly by a number of Governments of the Member States, or arises from concerted action by a number of Member States to combat a common threat such as environmental pollution (Joined Cases 62 and 72/87 Executif Regional Wallon and S.A. Glaverbel v. Commission [1988] ECR 1573).
