We need to calculate the economic costs and benefits of comprehensive screening of newborns. We must also consider the potential consequences—such as emotional ones—of genetic disease on the family and society the potential loss of privacy to tested individuals and the use and abuse of the information by schools, employers, insurance companies, and other private or governmental agencies.
