Decorative. Titanium nitride has a golden color and is used extensively to coat steel and cemented carbide substrates for watch cases, watch bands, eyeglass frames, etc. It provides exceUent scratch resistance as weU as the desired aesthetic appearance, and it replaces gold coatings used previously. [Pg.51]

Coatings of refractory carbides and nitrides and more recently carbon and DLC are used extensively in decorative applications on jewelry, eyeglasses, and similar products in attractive colors such as gold (TiN) and metallic grey, or charcoal (DLC, CrN, and TaN). They provide a surface which is hard and wear resistant, sweat resistant and, in the case of gold, less costly. They are usually applied by cathode sputtering and less frequently by CVD. [Pg.446]

As in previous volumes,1 2 the solution chemistry of gold cyanides as well as the solid-state chemistry of binary and polynary gold cyanides and carbides have been excluded from this review. [Pg.252]

The major use of sodium cyanamide is in the production of sodium cyanide, a compound that is used extensively in preparing solutions for the electroplating of metals. Another use for NaCN is in extraction processes employed to separate gold and silver from ores as a result of their forming complexes with CN . Sodium cyanide, an extremely toxic compound, is also used in the process known as case-hardening of steel. In this process, the object to be hardened is heated and allowed to react with the cyanide to form a layer of metal carbide on the surface. [Pg.367]
