Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a marked expansion of the endomysial space in thyroid eye disease extraocular muscle biopsies compared with that in control biopsies (69). An increased number of collagen fibers with hyaluronan were detected by immunogold staining, although the serum levels of hyaluronan and urinary glycosaminoglycans were not found to be sensitive indicators for the presence of these molecules within the extraocular muscles (69). Imai et al. further confirmed that the local accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in thyroid eye disease was not associated with the serum hyaluronan concentration (70). 

In this chapter, we will focus first on the use of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) microarrays to understand the role of this important family of polysaccharides in biological processes, and second on the employment of carbohydrate microarrays as tools for the detection of pathogens and viruses. 

As the sensitive methods of detection of glycosaminoglycans are extended and applied, as methods are developed for investigating on a microscale proteoglycans, and as the systematic analysis of tissues, etc., is afforded the required, correctly directed emphasis and attention with improved techniques, it may be predicted that such goals may be realized. However, in order to gain the absolutely necessary understanding of the associated reactions of biosynthesis, interaction and function, and degradation, research attention must be extended to the eellular and enzymic processes on which many of these phenomena are dependent.
