Severe depletion of glycogen often results in a rebound effect, in which so much is made that some is stored in inappropriate tissues, including the heart, and mineral imbalances often occur. Let us view more details of carbohydrate loading procedure. With fasting after exercise, muscle glycogen is restored, but only at a slow rate. A maximal rate of muscle glycogen restoration occurs with glucose or sucrose consumption. Fructose consumption can also restore muscle glycogen, but only at half the rate produced by gluco.se or sucrose.
