A plant explosion involved a mixture of nitrobenzene, nitric acid and a substantial quantity of water. Detonation occurred with a speed and power comparable to TNT. This was unexpected in view of the presence of water in the mixture [1]. The later reference deals with a detailed practical and theoretical study of this system and determination of the detonability limits and shock-sensitivity. The limits of detonability coincided with the limits of miscibility over a wide portion of the ternary composition diagram. In absence of water, very high sensitivity (similar to that of glyceryl nitrate) occurred between 50 and 80% nitric acid, the stoicheiometric proportion being 73% [2],... 

Certain esters of nitric acid (cellulose nitrate, glyceryl trinitrate) are often referred to as nitro compounds (nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin), but this terminology should be avoided. 

Standard Solution Prepare a 6% solution of USP Glyceryl Behenate Reference Standard in chloroform. 

The term saponification refers to the reactions of glyceryl ester with sodium or potassium hydroxide to produce a soap, which is the corresponding salt of the long-chain fatty acid. 

The related term substrate specificity cf. Crans, D. C. Whitesides, G. M., /. Am. Chem. Soc., 1985, 107, 7008 Zaks, A. Klibanov, A. M., /. Am. Chem. Soc., 1986, 108, 2767) refers to the productive interaction of a specific substrate with an enzyme, e.g. glyceryl kinase, chymotrypsin, subtilisin. While each substrate is examined individually and the kinetics of each is established separately, it is conceivable that a mixture of two or more substrates, when treated with the same enzyme in a given reaction mixture, would exhibit morpholytic selectivity - the generalized concept discussed in this chapter.

The earlier alkyd resins (glyceryl phthalate) were all of the heat-convertible variety on heating the resin was converted to a nonfusible type [15]. More recently an unmodified alkyd refers to a resin prepared from a dibasic acid, a polyol, and an oil or fatty acid. In some cases a monofunctional acid such as benzoic acid has been added to reduce functionality [23], Oxygen- or air-convertible alkyd resins are prepared by replacing part of the polybasic acid with the proper amount of an oxidizable unsubstituted fatty acid or acids such a linolenic, oleostearic, or others that are commercially available. With these two types of systems, alkyds are used to prepare coatings that cure upon baking or air drying.
