Glossary of Terms and Symbols

The principles of nC NMR spectrometry are described in many textbooks, some of which are listed in the references. A glossary of terms and symbols used in the following description is found below.

A number of glossaries of terms and symbols used in the several branches of chemistry have been pubHshed. They include physical chemistry (102), physical—organic chemistry (103), and chemical terminology (other than nomenclature) treated in its entirety (104). lUPAC has also issued recommendations in the fields of analytical chemistry (105), coUoid and surface chemistry (106), ion exchange (107), and spectroscopy (108), among others. 

The EOF is influenced by factors that can change the zeta potential and hence the thickness of the double layer (S), which is related to the zeta potential (Eq. (4.2)) (see glossary of terms for symbol definitions) ... 

This book hopefully retains only a portion of the problems which have complicated its organization. These have included literature variations in definitions and in polymer nomenclature such as the names for the nylons. As a key for the reader, we have provided a glossary of terms for symbols, abbreviations, and for polymer identification. 

Nomenclature rulings by groups which represent other sciences often interest the chemist. Those on applied spectroscopy by the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, those on colorimetry by the Optical Society of America, and those on symbols by the American Association of Physics Teachers are examples. The American Paper and Pulp Association, working in conjunction with the Institute of Paper Chemistry, has issued a Dictionary of Paper, and the American Petroleum Institute will issue a Glossary of Terms Used in Petroleum Refining. Further examples could be given. 

This Glossary contains a number of terms which have been used in the book. Those extracted from BS 499, Part 1 1991, Welding terms and symbols are marked by an asterisk. They are reproduced by permission of the British Standards Institute, 2 Park Street, London WlA 2BS, from whom copies of the standard may be obtained. Where two paragraphs are given, only the first gives the definition in BS 499.

A glossary of chromatographic terms and a table of chromatographic symbols are included in the appendices at the end of this book. Further information on the terminology of chromatography is available in the literature [8]. 

The 5th edition also includes an updated and expanded set of model experiments which reflect the current practice of chromatography. These are supported by a new chapter of a comprehensive set of problems with answers. A further new feature is a glossary of chromatographic terms and a list of symbols as an aide-memoire and to support the preceding chapters.
