Glossary of Technical Terms

Babbit metal. A soft alloy of metals such as tin, silver, arsenic, and cadmium combined with a lead base. It can be cast or used as a coating on steel bearings to form an oil-hke coating that reduces friction. Used to make oil-less bearings. [Pg.370]

Geiger counter. Also known as a scintillation counter. A device used to detect, measure, and record radiation. The instrument gets its name from one of its parts, the Geiger tube, which is a gas-fiUed tube containing coaxial cylindrical electrodes. [Pg.379]

X-ray diffraction. A method of spectroanalysis of substances using X-rays instead of light waves. It involves scattering of the X-radiation at angles that are unique to the substance being analyzed, thus yielding a spectrum of the atomic or molecular substance being analyzed. [Pg.394]

Z-N umber. The number of protons in a nucleus. Used mainly for heavier elements. [Pg.394]

1 X is a port access protocol for protecting networks via authentication, extremely useful in the wireless environment due to the nature of the medium. When a wireless device is authenticated via 802.1 x for network access, a virtual port is opened on the access point allowing for communication. [Pg.511]

11b the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) sets standards for communication through Local Area Networks (LANs). The 802.11b is the most widely deployed wireless LAN standard known as WiFi, 802.11b utilizes the 2.4 GHz spectrum with a bandwidth of 11 Mbps. A different standard, 802.11a, uses the 5 GHz spectrum and has a capacity of 54 Mbps. The 802.1 lg also uses 2.4 GHz. [Pg.511]

Bluetooth the need for low-cost short-range wireless radio networking among different electronic devices such as mobile PCs, cell phones, and [Pg.511]

Browsers are software tools designed for browsing Internet and web information. Popular browsers include Internet Explorer and Netscape both are free and downloadable from the Web. Browsers carry with them different features or capabilities. As many Web sites now require advanced features only found in the later editions of the browsers, it is advisable to update the browser periodically. [Pg.512]

Centrino refers to the mobile wireless and power management technology by Intel. Centrino allows one to connect to the Internet or a corporate network without wires or an add-on adapter card. Wireless LAN (WLAN) uses radio waves to wirelessly connect computers to each other, with ability to connect to 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.1 lg based infrastructures. It supports a wide range of industry wireless-LAN security standards. [Pg.512]

This chapter is organized into three main sections providing discussions on the chemistry of fire and explosion, and the chemistry of hazardous materials. The last section of this chapter provides the reader with an extensive glossary of technical terms dealing with chemical hazards and hazard materials handling. [Pg.153]

During 1999, a joint PDA/GAMP working group published a harmonized glossary of technical terms in this field. These terms are included in the Glossary of this book. [Pg.34]

The book deals primarily with crude oils and petroleum products derived from crude oils. In addition to cleanup techniques, it covers how oil spills are measured and detected, and the properties of the oil and its long-term fate in the environment. The effects of an oil spill on the environment and the effectiveness of cleanup and control vary significantly with the type of oil spilled. The types of oil are reviewed to help the reader understand the different cleanup and control measures needed for different types of oil and environmental circumstances. A glossary of technical terms is provided at the back of the book. [Pg.3]
