Gloss meter

Despite the existence of the standard methods, differences can occur between difTerent gloss meters. Experts suggest that the lack of specification of the characteristics of illumination and of the photodetector is a source of more discrepancies than is indicated in the standards it is suggested that the illumination should be CIE illuminant C and the detector filtered to respond as the human eye. Other points are that for some materials the maximum specular reflection does not occur at the incidence angle, the test temperature and meter orientation should be the same as that for calibration, and there have been differences between working standards calibrated in different countries. 

For this work, all samples were either injection molded automotive plaques or parts molded in accordance with our recommended processing conditions. Several different textured and smooth surfaces of varying gloss levels were evaluated. CIELAB color difference units were used exclusively. Finally, a 60 degree gloss meter was used to make sure gloss readings were comparable. 

The principles and standard procedures used in the determination of color can be found in ASTM E308. Equipment is conunercially available for measuring optical properties of polymers for these purposes. Major suppliers include Gardner (gloss meter for specular gloss, haze meter for haze and luminous transmittance, and clarity meter for specular transmission) and Hunter Lab (spectrocolorimeter).

Flat A surface that scatters or absorbs the light falling on it so as to be substantially free from gloss or sheen (0-15 gloss on a 60-degree gloss meter). 

Gloss Meter A device for measuring the light reflectance of coatings. Different brands with the same description (such as semi-gloss or flat) may have quite different ratings on the gloss meter. 

A test strip is printed using a precisely defined plate pressure and constant printing speed. Once the test strip is dried, the ink gloss is measured using a gloss meter.
