In these processes, the active compounds are driven to the area of adsorption by a carrier enclosed in matrix or core-shell configuration. Important parameters to increase the bioavailability are, for example, the size of the global compound, the encapsulated quantities (loading efficiency), the thickness of the external shell in case of time-driven controlled release, and also the shape of the particle. 

Penicillins. Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928 as an antibacterial elaborated by a mold, Penicillium notatum the global search for better antibiotic-producing organism species, radiation-induced mutation, and culture-media modifications have been used to maximize production of the compound. These efforts have resulted in the discovery of a variety of natural penicillins differing in side chains from the basic molecule, 6-aminopenici11anic acid [551-16-6], These chemical variations have produced an assortment of dmgs having diverse pharmacokinetic and antibacterial characteristics (see Antibiotics, P-lactams). 

Carbon. Most of the Earth s supply of carbon is stored in carbonate rocks in the Hthosphere. Normally the circulation rate for Hthospheric carbon is slow compared with that of carbon between the atmosphere and biosphere. The carbon cycle has received much attention in recent years as a result of research into the possible relation between increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, most of which is produced by combustion of fossil fuel, and the "greenhouse effect," or global warming. Extensive research has been done on the rate at which carbon dioxide might be converted to cellulose and other photosyntheticaHy produced organic compounds by various forms of natural and cultivated plants. Estimates also have been made of the rate at which carbon dioxide is released to soil under optimum conditions by various kinds of plant cover, such as temperature-zone deciduous forests, cultivated farm crops, prairie grassland, and desert vegetation. 

The issues in these evaluations are safety as related to toxicity and flammability, environmental impact as related to the generation of volatile organic compounds and global warming, product performance as related to insulating properties, conformity to fire codes, and the like, cost and availability, and regulatory requirements.
